About Odd Cod Studio | Coastal Artisan Goods Handcrafted in Massachusetts
Handcrafted on the North Shore of Massachusetts
Odd Cod Studio is the work of Michele and Gary Barden — two trained geographers, environmental professionals, and lifelong coastal New Englanders who believe that where you're from, and where you belong, deserves to be on your wall.
Founded in 2019, the studio grew out of Michele's hand-painted signs under the name Signs by MiCo — pieces celebrating the towns, harbors, and landmarks of the North Shore. What began as a local passion quickly found an audience, and Odd Cod Studio was born: a coastal artisan brand rooted in craftsmanship, a deep sense of place, and a design sensibility that feels modern without losing its soul.
A Cartographer's Eye
As geographers, Michele and Gary bring something most makers don't — a trained eye for place, landscape, and the stories embedded in names. From coordinate-based designs to town-inspired signs, every piece reflects the understated individuality of New England's coastal communities. It's the reason each sign feels specific, not generic. Grounded, not decorative.
Made by Hand, Every Time
Alongside the hand-painted wooden signs, Odd Cod Studio creates ropework pieces tied using centuries-old seamanship and marlinspike techniques, engraved goods, coastal-inspired apparel, and artisan ornaments. Every piece — painted, tied, engraved, or finished — is made by hand in Massachusetts using natural materials and traditional methods.
The Name
The cod is an enduring symbol of New England's maritime history, and "Odd Cod" celebrates that unique and independent spirit — the places, the people, and the quiet pride of knowing exactly where you come from.
Odd Cod Studio is a true family partnership. Michele and Gary design and create every collection together, driven by a shared commitment to preserving coastal craftsmanship and making goods that feel authentic, elevated, and built to last.
