About Odd Cod Studio | Handcrafted Coastal Ropework & Modern Maritime Design
Handcrafted on the North Shore of Massachusetts
Odd Cod Studio is a North Shore-based coastal craft studio creating handcrafted maritime ropework, hand-painted wooden signs, engraved goods, and modern coastal decor inspired by New England's rich maritime heritage.
Founded in 2019 by Michele and Gary Barden, Odd Cod Studio blends traditional nautical knot work and marlinspike seamanship techniques with a clean, modern aesthetic. Every piece is painted, tied, engraved, or finished by hand in Massachusetts.
Rooted in Maritime Tradition
What began as hand-painted signs featuring local landmarks and geographical names under the name Signs by MiCo has grown into a cohesive coastal brand centered on craftsmanship and a strong sense of place.
Our ropework pieces, including rope wreaths, framed nautical knots, and decorative knot work, are tied using centuries-old seamanship techniques historically used by seafarers. Rather than mass-produced coastal decor, we focus on natural materials, traditional craftsmanship, and refined design.
Designed for Modern Coastal Living
In addition to traditional maritime ropework, we create:
- Hand-painted wooden signs celebrating coastal towns
- Custom-engraved charcuterie boards and entertaining pieces
- Coastal-inspired apparel
- Artisan holiday ornaments
Each piece is designed to bring authentic coastal character into modern homes.
A Strong Sense of Place
As trained geographers and environmental professionals, Michele and Gary bring a cartographer’s perspective to their work. From coordinate-based designs to town-inspired pieces, Odd Cod Studio reflects the landscapes, heritage, and understated individuality of New England’s coastal communities.
The name “Odd Cod” honors the cod, an enduring symbol of the region’s maritime history, and celebrates the independent spirit of the North Shore.
Family-Owned & Crafted in Massachusetts
Odd Cod Studio is a true family partnership. Michele and Gary design and create each collection together, combining traditional nautical ropework with thoughtful, modern design.
Their mission is simple: preserve maritime craftsmanship while creating coastal goods that feel authentic, elevated, and built to last.
